Lynn’s caregiving journey with Dennis has evolved alongside her son’s transformation from a child with texture sensitivities and wandering tendencies into a passionate powerlifter with big dreams. Food has been central to that evolution – first as a source of challenge, now as a source of connection and growth. As Dennis trained for power lifting competitions and worked to shift into a healthier weight class, he embraced mindful eating, learning portion control, cooking skills, and how to prepare high-protein meals like Buddha bowls with air-fried chicken, all to make sure he can compete in a weight class where he’s certain he’ll win. Lynn still manages most of the cooking, but she’s gently pushing for Dennis to gain independence in the kitchen. While Lynn worries about his long-term independence as she and her husband age, she also sees how every meal they prepare together helps Dennis grow more confident in caring for himself. And she realizes that holding him tight out of fear didn’t do anything for him – letting go of the reins allowed him to become who he is – a Special Olympics weightlifting champion.
