When Tarn realized her mother’s Alzheimer’s was getting worse, but she still wanted to feel useful, Tarn got her to help her make dumplings, a favourite family recipe. Her mom loved helping – so much that Tarn started selling them, creating Dumpling Drop, a successful local business that now produces thousands of handmade dumplings each day. But behind the success is Tarn’s private battle—balancing financial responsibility, constant worry about her mom, and the guilt of being the only daughter of an Asian family who’s not spending enough time with the mother they love. With the help of their devoted stepfather and a community of Thai aunties, Tarn keeps the business running while mom comes in for a daily lunch. Even though her mom can’t really communicate verbally anymore, she still has muscle memory, and still loves to show her love for Tarn by helping to roll dumplings.
