The Family are celebrating Dottie’s birthday with a party for friends and family. During speeches Lynne says she’d fly to the moon to be with her sister, then gets lost during the rest of her speech. Later Lynne’s mental state begins to unravel. She thinks she’s staying in a noisy hotel. Meanwhile, a surprise guest has arrived from Calgary: Lynne’s son Jake. He finds Hank and Michael using ‘therapeutic fibbing’ to calm Auntie Lynne. Moved, he is inspired to use the technique himself.
Therapeutic Fibbing is technique often recommended by dementia experts. It is the practice of agreeing or saying things that are not true to avoid causing someone distress and to make them feel safe and comforted.
