Pemba is disheartened by looking after her mother, whose Alzheimer’s disease means that she often doesn’t even remember who Pemba is — and when she occasionally does, she lashes out at her, making the caregiving work feel ever more difficult. Pemba decides to make a familiar dish combining their Indigenous and African heritage to share with her mom, in the hopes of jogging her memory about their family heritage and experiences of traveling to Canada from the American South.
