Over 700,000 Canadians live with dementia. But despite how common it is, we still don’t talk about it openly. The word ‘dementia’ is scary, and the condition is heavily stigmatized. Because of this stigma, we are often unprepared when we, or someone we love, is diagnosed with dementia.
But a dementia diagnosis doesn’t mean the end — it means a change. There are people living vibrant, meaningful lives in the wake of diagnosis. We speak to those who have written memoirs, led community-based advocacy work, and learned how to leverage new technology to navigate daily life.
Care partners are often essential to this journey, but they’re faced with constant changes and challenges that can have serious effects on their own wellbeing.
We hope to counter stigma by sharing the stories of those who have navigated life after diagnosis. What went well, what they wish they had done differently, and ultimately, how they made it work together.
