The Macauley Family attend Dottie’s geriatric psychiatry appointment with Dr. Chan. Dottie tries to prove to Dr Chan that she’s on top of things when, in reality, she’s scared. Dr Chan sees the rest of the family separately but instead of talking about Dottie they focus on their own concerns around dementia. She tries to clarify what therapeutic fibbing involves, and, as the family are about to depart, uses it expertly when Auntie Lynne greets her for a second time.
Therapeutic Fibbing is technique often recommended by dementia experts. It is the practice of agreeing or saying things that are not true to avoid causing someone distress and to make them feel safe and comforted.
